~I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.--Revelation 3:8~

This Month's Thoughts for:

Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.

Psalm 43:3 NIV

Body-Now that all of the holiday celebrations are nearly over, it's time to look at taking care of ourselves. If you haven't already been, you need to find the right balance in life so that you can have time for exercise and to strengthen yourself.

Mind-Whether you're a student or a graduate, it's never too late to learn something new. Keep your eyes and ears open so that you may find guidance through God's word.

Spirit-Take time each day to pray and talk to God. He hears you.

Renew, Restore, Create!

Most single mothers don't have the resources to offer their children a fun day out at local attractions such as museums, amusement parks, etc. Higher Ground Ministries is looking to provide single parent families with one day of fun that they can share and enjoy without worrying about how to pay for it! You can help by donating tickets to local attractions, food and gas cards, or well, money so that we can purchase these things. We will work with local social service agencies and churches to identify families to participate in this project.

Women who participate must be willing to work with a Higher Ground mentor to develop a "Life Improvement Plan" and will be given information to help them overcome whatever barriers they may be facing in their lives. We hope that by providing this day of family bonding that we are able to strengthen families that are often stressed by the demands of trying to make ends meet. Sometimes just spending some time with those we love doing something that we don't ordinarily get to do is the right prescription for breaking us out of a rut and inspiring us to makes changes in our lives.

We hope you will consider helping with this project! E-mail any questions to us here.

Strengthen Your Body, Mind and Spirit!

Higher Ground Ministries will be starting our weekly women's groups on July 5, 2011 at 6 p.m. But this won't be just another sit-down meeting! We will be assembling at the C.J. Brown Reservoir in Springfield, OH for our first ever Women's Walk and Talk! All ladies are welcome to join us and you can even bring your children. Kids can walk ahead of us and enjoy the outdoors while we fellowship and share this time together to talk about whatever concerns, challenges or ideas tht might be on our minds.

We will meet up by the Ranger's Station just so that we can all walk together in our group. We will walk the length of the paved area up above the dam and then return to the Ranger Station, this walk is about a mile long. Please wear good walking shoes and bring a bottle of water! We will walk rain or shine, unless the rain is accompanied by thunder and lightning.

For future meetings, we will begin our walks from different locations throughout the city, but this seemed like a good place to start for our first meeting. There are places to rest along the way and when we finish our walk, we can meet briefly to have discussion, share our experiences and also to talk about how Higher Ground Ministries wishes to provide support for the ladies in this community. We are hoping to do this at least twice each week, so if you can't make it to this one please plan to join us at the next walk! For more information you can e-mail me or call 937-317-0881.

Have a wonderful week!

It's been awhile...

Hello, all. Sorry it's been so long since my last post. I've been under the weather and my husband just had surgery. Everything is ok for now, though and I wanted to check in.

Regarding the group in Springfield, I am thinking that I will need to push those meetings back for a while. I am not able to do all of the planning right now and I want to be able to do them well. Instead, I was thinking of holding a monthly chat, here on the blog. If I can figure out the logistics, I will probably go with that idea at least until I can get the live meetings going again. I think it is important to have the discussions, whether we do them in person or not. Please check back for more information on the meeting format. I'll have more details as soon as I look further into how to set up the chat.

Thanks to those of you who live in the Springfield area for your patience as we have dealt with the weather issues and now with my own health issues. I appreciate your willingness to participate in the group and hope that the option of a chat instead of a live meeting will bring even more people to our next gathering.

Stay tuned...

Healthy Relationships: Where do you fit in?

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

James 1:12 New International Version

In relationships, we are all put to the test in one way or another. Whether we are being taught a lesson in trusting others or in learning to love selflessly, we must always be on the lookout for signs that the enemy is lurking nearby. Sometimes what we think might be one of God's tests for us is actually our own ego struggling to overpower His influence in our lives.

If you are fighting constantly over the same issues with your significant other, take a step back and ask yourself, "What would God want me to do here?" It could be that He wants you to take enough pride in yourself to stand up for your right to be respected in the relationship. Maybe you need to step up and express your dissatisfaction with the way you are being treated in order to make your loved one understand what you need. Or maybe you are with someone who is treating you unfairly and God wants you to guard your heart.

If your usual tendency is to run away from a relationship when you aren't 100% satisfied with the other person's behavior, this could be an indicator that you aren't being realistic in your expectations. No one is perfect and learning to love one another's flaws as well as one's gifts is part of a healthy relationship.

A great resource for you to check out if you are having difficulty sustaining relationships is "Safe People" by Townsend and Cloud. I am currently going through a Bible Study with some ladies and we are using this book as our guide. There is alot of great information about boundaries and how to identify traits in others who may be unsafe for us. If you get a chance, check this one out.
